In the custom workspace in my screenshot Motion Modified, some shortcuts are not the same as usual, but in the default Motion workspace, the shortcuts are unchanged. It doesn't pay to get too comfortable and forget to keep to date with changes. I just had a scan through the Workspace help page, and actually learned something! Plus it reminded me of a new feature I did know about, but had forgotten and never used. It changes some of the shortcuts specifically for video and frame animations, like Ctrl N takes you to the next frame rather than open the New Document panel. Save your GIF in your desired destination.I think rather than opening the Timeline panel inside your current Workspace, you'd do better selecting the Motion Workspace. Make sure the Looping Options panel says ‘Forever.’ Select ‘GIF 128 Dithered’ for the preset. Next, make sure your settings are correct. I also deleted the blank pink layer to make the GIF run more smoothly. Shapes are Collada (.dae) 3D model files. You can add your own custom shapes to the shape menu. Shapes include single-mesh objects like a donut, sphere, or hat, as well as multiple mesh objects such as a cone, cube, cylinder, soda can, or wine bottle. You can easily drag and drop to switch it up. Choose 3D > New Shape From Layer, and select a shape from the menu. I played the GIF and realized that my words were out of order. This is based on preference, but I prefer the 0.5 sec time. To make sure your GIF is on a loop, select the word ‘Once’ under the first panel and change it to ‘Forever.’Īdjust the times (and sequence if necessary) This will convert all the layers into frames that you can easily use in your animation GIF. Convert the layers into framesĪfter the frame animation is created, click on the small panel (highlighted in pink below) and select ‘Make Frames from Layers.’ *if it says Create Video Timeline instead, just click on the arrow to the right of it and select the Frame Animation option. Go to Window > Timeline to view the timeline below the files.Ĭlick on the button that says ‘Create Frame Animation.’ Make sure the layers are arranged in the order you want the GIF to go. This is what the layers panel of Photoshop should look like for you once all the files are imported. So you have to reconstruct the transparency if it exists. This will open the animation but in my experience you lose all transparency for the frames. To open an animated gif with Photoshop CS3 or CS4 choose File > Import > Video Frames to Layers. Select all the files that you want and click ‘okay’ to import all the files at once. Adobe really hosed CS3 and CS4 where this is concerned. In Photoshop, go to File > Scripts > Load Files into Stack. You should have 10 files in total by now. To do this, I’ll change the color of the word ‘this’ to white.Ĭontinue until all the words are back to white. Even though it’ll be the same design as above, you need to save another copy of the file. You should have 7 files total by now if you’re following the same steps as I am. I used a cornflower blue, cerulean blue, then a navy.Īgain, make sure each step is saved as a separate file each time you alter the graphic. Start by changing the top word to the lightest color.Ĭontinue with the rest of the colors. For example, I’m going to make a circle animation. In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to create a vector GIF from scratch in Photoshop. You’ll save the files in a sequence exactly like above. You can make an animated gif from photos, vectors, or from scratch. Once you have all the words written on the image, start creating your color gradient. The words are finished! Make sure each file is saved as an individual. Then add text on the photo, one word at a time. If this happens, click on the first frame and. If you have used the Timeline before, it may populate with empty frames by default. I’m using this hot pink because it’s bold and stands out easily. Ready to animate her sketches, Plant opened the Timeline (Window > Timeline), selected Create Frame Animation from the dropdown menu, and chose Make Frames From Layers from the flyout menu. I’m creating this GIF for Instagram, so I’m making it in a 1000 pixel by 1000 pixel square, but you can customize this size easily. This tutorial will walk you through creating a flashing text GIF in Photoshop step-by-step so you can easily do it. I’ve been doing them for fun for a while now. GIFs are seen constantly in today’s media-they’re used in social media, every listicle ever, even texts! Before they were really a ‘thing,’ I learned how to make these in my high school freshman year photo class. Along with ASCII's use in communication, however, it also began to appear in the underground online art groups of the period. The limitations of computers of that time period necessitated the use of text characters to represent images. The widespread usage of ASCII art can be traced to the computer bulletin board systems of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Note that it was not ASCII art in a sense that the 1403 was driven by an EBCDIC-coded platform and the character sets and trains available on the 1403 were derived from EBCDIC rather than ASCII, despite some glyphs commonalities. At the same time, Kenneth Knowlton was producing realistic images, also on line printers, by overprinting several characters on top of one another. In the 1960s, Andries van Dam published a representation of an electronic circuit produced on an IBM 1403 line printer. What is known is that text images appeared frequently on radioteletype in the 1960s and the 1970s. However, none of the "old" RTTY art has been discovered yet. According to a chapter in the "RTTY Handbook", text images have been sent via teletypewriter as early as 1923. RTTY stands for Radioteletype character sets such as Baudot code, which predated ASCII, were used. TTY stands for "TeleTYpe" or "TeleTYpewriter", and is also known as Teleprinter or Teletype. Since 1867, typewriters have been used for creating visual art. History Calligram of the constellation " Sirius" from a 9th-century astronomical manuscript Typewriter art A portion of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, 6 January 1875, showing advertisements made from typewriter art. ASCII art was also used in early e-mail when images could not be embedded. Also, to mark divisions between different print jobs from different users, bulk printers often used ASCII art to print large banner pages, making the division easier to spot so that the results could be more easily separated by a computer operator or clerk. ĪSCII art was invented, in large part, because early printers often lacked graphics ability and thus, characters were used in place of graphic marks. "Studies in Perception I" by Knowlton and Leon Harmon from 1966 shows some examples of their early ASCII art. Most examples of ASCII art require a fixed-width font (non-proportional fonts, as on a traditional typewriter) such as Courier for presentation.Īmong the oldest known examples of ASCII art are theĬreations by computer-art pioneer Kenneth Knowlton from around 1966, who was working for Bell Labs at the time. ASCII art can be created with any text editor, and is often used with free-form languages. The term is also loosely used to refer to text-based visual art in general. ANSI art The alphabet in Newskool (Note: artificially shrunk vertically) Dag Hammarskjöld, printout from teleprinter 1961–62ĪSCII art is a graphic design technique that uses computers for presentation and consists of pictures pieced together from the 95 printable (from a total of 128) characters defined by the ASCII Standard from 1963 and ASCII compliant character sets with proprietary extended characters (beyond the 128 characters of standard 7-bit ASCII). This term is also used for bees!Įxample: “The swarm of butterflies added a touch of magic to the meadow, their wings shimmering in the sunlight.” Bison – A Herd of Bison □ĭid you know? Bison, the hefty grazers of the prairies, usually gather in groups known as a ‘herd’ for protection and foraging purposes.Įxample: “The herd of bison moved majestically across the prairie, a testament to the resilience of nature.” Buffalo – A Herd of Buffalo □ Interesting Fact: Bees are often found buzzing together in large groups known as a ‘swarm’, especially when they are migrating to establish a new hive.Įxample: “A swarm of bees busily hovered around the colorful garden, pollinating the flowers.” Boars – A Sounder of Boars □įun Fact: Wild boars are social animals that live in groups known as ‘sounders’, typically consisting of females and their young.Įxample: “A sounder of boars foraged in the underbrush, their sharp tusks glistening in the sunlight.” Butterflies – A Swarm of Butterflies □ĭid you know? When butterflies gather together, often during migration, they’re known as a ‘swarm’. Interesting Fact: When badgers come together, they’re known as a ‘cete’, a term specifically reserved for these black-and-white burrowers.Įxample: “A cete of badgers was spotted, their distinct stripes making them easily identifiable.” Bats – A Colony of Bats □įun Fact: Bats are social animals that live in large groups, or ‘colonies’, often found hanging upside down in caves or trees.Įxample: “The colony of bats fluttered out of the cave at dusk, ready to hunt for insects.” Bears – A Sleuth or Sloth of Bears □ĭid you know? Bears are often solitary, but when they do gather, they’re known as a ‘sleuth’ or ‘sloth’, terms that reflect their investigative nature or their slow, deliberate movements.Įxample: “The sleuth of bears rummaged through the forest, foraging for food.” Bees – A Swarm of Bees □ You might be surprised by some of them! Baboons – A Troop of Baboons □ĭid you know? Baboons live in hierarchical groups known as ‘troops’, emphasizing their organized and social behavior.Įxample: “The troop of baboons chattered loudly, creating a lively atmosphere in the savannah.” Badgers – A Cete of Badgers □ Let’s explore the special names we use when these animals gather in groups. This letter brings us a variety of fascinating creatures, from the social baboons and busy bees to the solitary bears. This term is likely derived from the aardvark’s name, which in Afrikaans means “ earth pig” or “ground pig”, and their powerful digging abilities that could resemble a ‘fortress’ or ‘armory.Įxample: “An armory of aardvarks was spotted, a rare sight given their typically solitary behavior.” Animals Beginning with BĪs we continue our journey through the animal kingdom, we’ve reached the letter ‘B’. Aardvarks – An Armory of Aardvarks □□ĭid you know? Although aardvarks are usually solitary animals, when they do gather, they’re known as an ‘armory’. Apes are among the most intelligent creatures on the planet, and their collective noun reflects this!Įxample: “The shrewdness of apes was quite a spectacle as they used tools to fetch food, demonstrating their intelligence and adaptability.” Alligators – A Congregation of Alligators □įun Fact: Alligators are known to gather in large groups, especially in warm sunlit spots, which is likely why the term ‘congregation’ is used to describe them.Įxample: “We spotted a congregation of alligators sunbathing on the river bank during our boat tour. Interesting Fact: Apes are called a ‘shrewdness’ due to their high intelligence and keen judgment. Ready to march with an army or join a congregation? Let’s explore the collective nouns for animals starting with ‘A’! Ants – An Army of Ants □ĭid you know? Ants are often referred to as an ‘army’ because of their coordinated and disciplined behavior, much like a well-drilled military force.Įxample: “The army of ants marched relentlessly toward the sugar cube, showcasing their strong cooperative behavior.” Apes – A Shrewdness of Apes □ Since all the miniature icons are clustered together, the resulting bunch easily reads as a “U” in the logo mark. The Unilever logo also confirms well to the Gestalt principle of proximity. This is why “I” is perceived as a unit instead of the top horizontal bar. In addition, the short segments of “I” appear considerably closer together than the long and short segments of the top horizontal bar, which has greater gaps between the crevice in the “M” and the letters “B” and “M”. To some extent, it’s because we instantly recognise the silhouette of the three letters, but mostly because we tend to perceive objects that are close together, such as a series of lines, as a group. This is why when we look at the IBM logo, we see three letters composed of short horizontal lines, stacked atop each other, instead of the 8 horizontal lines interspersed with uniform gaps. In the example of the IBM logo below, our brain combines each of the adjacent horizontal bars to create a single image of the IBM logo. Excessive spaces between letters can be quite confusing as to where one word ends and the next begins. For instance, consider how our eye leverages proper kerning to discern which letters make up individual words in a sentence. When different elements are laid out close to each other, they are perceived to be belonging to the same group. Here’s a logo-designer-oriented crash course to help you utilise gestalt principles in your work! These principles are fundamental building blocks for creating visual meaning, especially in the field of logo design. Understanding how a design is interpreted and perceived is a crucial asset that visual hierarchy and communicators aspire to possess. In the jargon of psychology, gestalt refers to the basic principles that aid us in visually perceiving order.ĭesigners are often curious about what happens when someone’s eye meets their design creation, and how their mind reacts to the piece being shared. Derived from the German word for “shape”, pattern”, “structure”, or “shape”, it hints at the overall look of something that is greater than the sum of its parts. Since then, the word Gestalt has been thrown around a lot in design. Kurt Koffka, Wolfgang Kohler, and Max Wertheimer are the prominent founders of the collection of principles and theories, collectively known as the Gestalt Effect. In the 1920s, a group of German psychologists came up with a series of theories of visual perception, analysing how humans group together different objects into a single coherent whole or in groups, when presented with separate elements arranged together in a particular way. In this post, he discusses Gestalt Theory and the role it plays in Logo Design. This is a superb guest blog post from Evan Brown, who is a Marketing Manager and Blogger over at DesignMantic. As part of my plan for 2017 to roll out more frequent content, I’m also pulling in guest posts from the Logo Geek community to share graphic design insights and wisdom that I can learn from too.
